Out of Focus…on purpose

iso 2500If you want the background “out of focus,” get really close to your main subject. Getting close to your subject changes the background sharpness. Lots of small bright highlights are harder to get “out of focus” than larger objects. Just controlling the f-stop won’t usually turn a crystal sharp background into a dreamy soft “out of focus background.”
